Stahl, Ernst Leopold

(1882-1949)

   Critic, dramaturg, scholar. Stahl was an important "non-Berlin" critic; he frequently visited the

   German theater capital but remained in Munich or his native Mannheim nearly all of his career. Stahl was among the first to recognize the importance of Richard Weichert's work in Mannheim and later in Frankfurt am Main. He was also significant for his interest in stage design; few reviewers before him wrote much about design's role in a production, and he frequently organized museum exhibitions of stage designs. Stahl was also an insightful theater historian, writing books on Shakespeare in 19th-century German theater.
